Netflix finally brings a good romantic comedy movie after a really long time, and it’s a blessing. The Life List—such a cozy yet slightly haunting name. This Netflix movie is based on the book of the same name, The Life List, and was released on March 28, 2025. It stars Sofia Carson, Kyle Allen, and Connie Britton as the main leads, along with several other amazing characters.
This movie follows Alex (Sofia), who is on a journey to find her missing pieces, to discover where she truly belongs, and to figure out what will make her happy. And of course, there’s a little adorable twist that makes it all the more special.
What is happening in The Life List?
The story begins at a New Year’s party where Alex looks dull, annoyed, and completely disconnected. She isn’t happy with her life—though she denies it. That same night, she spends time with her mother, only to find out that her mother’s illness has returned, and this time, she has very little time left. A few months later, her mother is gone.
At the lawyer’s office, Alex and her siblings gather to discuss their inheritance. The will is read, and—boom—Alex, the favorite child, gets nothing but a file. Inside are goodbye videotapes and letters. The lawyer, Brad (Kyle Allen), explains the situation. Turns out, her mother wanted Alex to rediscover herself, to figure out what truly mattered to her. And she did that using Alex’s own childhood Life List.
The challenge? Alex has to tick off everything from that list. Each time she completes something, she receives a new video from her mother. And if she finishes it all by the next New Year, a big reward awaits.
At first, Alex doesn’t care much. She has nothing to lose. But deep down, she starts to love this journey. It unravels so much about herself, her family, and life in general. And eventually, it all makes her a better person.
Why should you watch The Life List?
- The chemistry between Alex and Brad? Simply the best!
- Every single dialogue in this movie holds meaning—it will blow your mind.
- The relatability and emotional connection? Insane.
- A wholesome, feel-good romantic comedy that will leave an impact.
- You’ll laugh, cry, feel frustrated, and completely lose yourself in the movie.
- Sofia Carson and Kyle Allen—enough said.
One of the most beautiful things in this movie is the four questions Alex’s mother asks to help her understand if she truly loves someone. The four amazing questions from The Life List:
- Is he kind?
- Can you tell him everything in your heart?
- Does he help you become a better version of yourself?
- Can you imagine having a family with him?
Why you shouldn’t watch The Life List?
There’s just a tiny chance you might get bored at some points. And that’s it. Otherwise, it’s amazing.
The life lessons
Leaving a video instead of an inheritance sounds like such a heartwarming idea. Imagine leaving something like that for your loved ones—a piece of you that stays with them forever. But of course, not everyone knows when they’re going to die, like Elizabeth (Alex’s mother) did.
It’s so easy to forget what you once aspired to do. But working for it? That takes real strength. Having a Life List makes it all easier. Over time, it turns into an achievement list, and you eventually feel proud of what you’ve accomplished. But that doesn’t mean rushing things. Some things—like finding true love—take time. And that’s okay. You just have to devote time to yourself, too.
Having meaning in life makes living it so much easier.
The ending
Alex’s last reward was here mother’s home! And just like that, the movie ends on the same note where it all began—New Year’s Eve. Except this time, Alex is different. She’s more alive, more happy, as if she’s a completely new person. She sees life with a better and different lens. And that’s exactly what this journey was all about.
