When Soorma was released in 2018, it did not receive the attention it truly deserved. It came and went silently, even though it narrated one of the most inspiring real-life stories in Indian sports history. Looking back now, Soorma appears to be a film that many missed out on, and it surely deserves more respect today.

The film follows Sandeep Singh, the former captain of the Indian national hockey team. He was a talented young player whose career was almost over before it had properly begun. Just when he was about to take off, a freak accident changed everything—he was accidentally shot in the back and paralyzed below the waist. Most would have called it a day then. But not Sandeep. He made one of the biggest comebacks in Indian sports to don national colors again. That story deserves telling, and Soorma tells it truthfully.
Diljit Dosanjh plays the role of Sandeep Singh, and he does a fantastic job. His performance brings a lot of heart to the character. He does not overact or dramatize the performance; instead, his acting is understated, emotional, and very real. He conveys the pain of his character when he is lying in bed, unsure whether he will ever walk again. He brings to life the glimmer of hope felt when the character begins to train again. Diljit does not just act; he actually inhabits the character of Sandeep. That in itself is one major reason why the film still works.
Taapsee Pannu plays Harpreet, who is Sandeep’s love interest and a hockey player herself. Her character is strong and supportive, although it would have been great to dig deeper into her side of the story. Nevertheless, Taapsee makes her presence felt. Angad Bedi, who plays Sandeep’s elder brother, also delivers a heartfelt performance. The bond between the two brothers is one of the emotional highlights of the film.
Shaad Ali has directed the film in a fairly straightforward manner. On one hand, this is good; on the other, it also doesn’t push any emotional boundaries. At times, it feels just a bit safe, as some of Sandeep’s journey could have been afforded more time. For instance, the emotional depth could have been better explored—his mental struggle, his physical training after the injury, and the pressure he faced on his return to the sport. Nevertheless, the grip over your attention is maintained throughout the film, especially in the latter half.
Even the music stands out in Soorma. Songs like “Ishq Di Baajiyaan” and “Soorma Anthem” help the film create an emotional, energetic atmosphere. The background score complements the visuals of the film brilliantly and helps with the viewer’s emotional connection to the characters. The hockey scenes have been shot well. They may not be as fast-paced as some other sports films, but they feel real and grounded.
One of Soorma‘s best qualities is that it does not merely present a sports story; it unfolds a human storybook. It reminds us of the pain, sacrifice, and silent hard work behind every celebrated player. Sandeep Singh’s story proves that one should never give up, no matter how rough the road gets.
What was the reason for Soorma being underrated? Perhaps it was not loud. Perhaps it clashed with some big releases. Probably due to the simultaneous release with several big films. Or maybe due to the fact that people were not very aware of Sandeep Singh’s story. However, in hindsight, we can say one thing about the film: it had something extra. It is not a perfect film; it is an imperfect one. But it is real, emotional, and heartfelt.
If you have not seen Soorma so far, or maybe you saw it once and forgot about it, it is worth watching once more. It reminds us in a gentle way about the power of the human spirit. It becomes all the more memorable thanks to Diljit Dosanjh for his honest performance.
