I haven’t seen such a peaceful movie in a while. Drawing Closer was just love, love, and pure love. They probably said their love came with an expiration date, but for me, it was eternal. I couldn’t have asked for more. It was a pure, heartwarming, lovely, and quiet experience watching this movie. I believe you should definitely put this on your watch list when you’re in the mood for love.
Akito and Haruna—what a mature love they had. The drawings that brought them closer felt like six gerberas to me. Akito found his peace in her, and Haruna finally found a friend—a best friend. It was hard for them to endure the pain they were going through, but together, it felt like nothing. The power of their love and togetherness was above any illness.
Akito became the reason for Haruna’s smile. The gerberas, her best friend Ayaka—everything he did struck the right chord with her. At least Haruna knew she died with love engraved in her heart, along with the beautiful stories Akito gave her. They were happy in the time they lived and were probably excited to meet each other again after they died.
You might have guessed the story of this Japanese movie called Drawing Closer. It might not be too different from what you’ve already seen, but it is surely touching. The story is about two young teenagers who have only a limited time to live—six months and one year, respectively. Haruna learns about her six-month time frame just before meeting Akito, and the next six months become the greatest of her life. Living a normal life was all she ever wanted.
This movie never showed us that Haruna, after meeting Akito, could suddenly do everything. But whatever she did, she could now do it with a smile. Like the paintings that brought them close, it was a simple pencil drop that caught Akito’s attention and connected him with Haruna. All those small things matter when you have an expiration date and when you know this person is someone you love.
Akito’s story was no different from Haruna’s, although he lived for three and a half years instead of one, thanks to a surgery. But through Haruna, he finally began to understand what life truly means—what he had that others might not. He started cherishing his family bonds better.
I would recommend everyone to watch this must-watch movie at least once. It teaches you a lot about life and even more about love.
