The series is available on Netflix. The first season was released on December 10, 2020. Season 2 was also released on December 22, 2022. Now, we are eagerly waiting for Season 3. Alice in Borderland Season 3 is expected to release this year, i.e., 2025, on Netflix.
The storyline of Alice In Borderline
The story is pretty simple, at least it appears to be. A bunch of people are somehow transported to an imaginary world, and they have to survive all the games happening there in order to live. If you fail to win the game, you lose. You lose your life!
SEASON 1
The series, Alice in Borderland is about a boy called Arisu (played by Kento Yamazaki). He leaves his home and goes to his friends, only to find they’ve left their jobs as well. The three are now celebrating their freedom. They somehow end up in a washroom of the station. Coming out of which they find out that there is no one around. No human being anywhere in the country.
A lady shows up and conveys that they now need to play some games in order to survive. They pick one phone each, and the phones have a face recognition system. They are shocked, obviously. But soon some voices echo that the registrations have now closed and there are five players in the game—three boys and two ladies. They think it’s all some kind of joke until the first person dies by a laser beam in the game. Now it’s all serious and scary. I will try not to explain all the games as there are many.
The other four make it to the next game, while one of them is heavily injured.
Moving Further
In the second episode, the second game is a tagger game. This is the game in which Arisu meets Usagi for the first time, as well as Aguni, two other main characters. Some people die, but these pass on to the next game, a game of Hearts. In this game, Arisu’s friends, Chota and Karube, sacrifice their lives for Arisu. Usagi finds Arisu on the streets in a half-dead state and takes him with her. Now they together play all the games.
Apparently, when a bunch of people live somewhere, they tend to adapt to a community. Hence in Alice in Borderland, in that imaginary world, there is a place called “Beach” that has become a community. It has a leader, Hatter, and the civilians, who have been players in the games for a long time. There, Arisu and Usagi are forced to join hands with them and collect all the cards they get in the games. They believe collecting all the cards will take them back to the real world. Arisu and Usagi meet Chishiya, Kuina, Ann, Niragi, Aguni, and Tatta, the other leads there, who are going to help Arisu find the answers he’s looking for.
Last Episode of Season 1
Hatter dies in the last episode of Season 1, and the game in the last episode involves all 58 players. It is a massacre among players. They all kill each other in order to win and survive. Some of them, including the above leads, make it through the game after severe injuries. And the four—Arisu, Usagi, Chishiya, and Kuina—meet at a place from where all the games were being controlled. There they witness that all the controllers are already dead, and these four see a video running all over the walls of a lady called Mira. She is presumed to be the game master. But is she? The episode ends with the announcement of Stage Two (Season 2) that’ll involve face cards as well.
What this Japenese Drama teaches about life?
Alice in Borderland gives you some really important life lessons. Life is a game we must all play. Play it with your heart to enjoy and make it all count. Your true self is exposed when you are in a life-and-death situation.
In the whole drama, where everyone is thinking only about themselves, Arisu and Usagi care for all, which becomes their superpower, and they succeed in all of the games.
They lose hope many times, but they have each other to rely on. A drive and a motive to find answers and return to the real world keep them moving forward and winning all of the games. They care for life. They now understand that this precious life we’ve got counts for each and every step we take. Not even a single step forward should go in vain. Live your life as if there’s no tomorrow.
Unrealistic Comparison to Squid Game
Many viewers compare Alice in Borderland to Squid Game, but this comparison doesn’t entirely make sense.
While both are survival dramas, their themes differ. In Squid Game, participants voluntarily join to win a cash prize. In contrast, Alice in Borderland is far more emotional and philosophical. The players are forced to compete and fight for their lives, making the series a poignant commentary on survival and the value of life.
Alice in Borderland is also visually stunning and deeply cinematic. It doesn’t revolve around money but instead explores how far humans will go to survive.
